Two parties this weekend- it was a whirlwind!

Happy Belated 4th of July everyone!  I hope you all had a safe and wonderful holiday with your friends, family and loved ones.

Our weekend was filled with food, fireworks, fun and TWO painting parties!  I usually only have one a weekend but I added a private party to our already scheduled calendar party so we had a full weekend!

Abstract Fireworks and Cityscapes...
Theme for the night- "It's getting hot in here".  Our painting studio got a little toasty due to an AC snafu, but we powered through the heat and turned out some great paintings.  I gave people the choice to do one canvas or a triptych.   There were a couple of first time painters in the group AND OUR FIRST GUY!!!  So excited to show that Paint N' Parties are not just for the ladies!

the project...

 first time painting!

 festive fireworks!

perfect couples night out!

happy painters, even in the sauna
(and just an FYI- AC snafu is FIXED!)

It was the perfect way to kick off the Holiday weekend- thanks everyone for coming to paint!

Mojitos and a Walk at Midnight
Our second party featured a painting inspired by Leonid Afrimov.  Colleen Murphy, of Murphy Wellness Center, put together this private party in studio and it was a blast.  She picked the painting, the signature beverage and invited her friends and family to paint.  We had our first teenager in an adult class- and he did a great job!  So not only can males come to Paint N' Party To Go, male teenagers like it too!

I was very impressed with all the paintings since this was a challenging painting choice.  It goes to show you that Paint N' Parties are for everyone- even if you are a first time painter!!!  All you have to do is take that first step and put paintbrush to canvas!

Here are some of the pics...

I think the best thing about Paint N' Party To Go is everyone brings their own style to the canvas.  Whether loose and free or controlled and detailed, every painting looks different!

I had such a fun time painting with the group!  Thanks so much, Colleen!

And thanks also to Rachel at Apron Strings Bakery who catered the party with her delicious cupcakes- she even had Mojito cupcakes to tie into our theme.  As always, delicious and our painters LOVED them!

Peanut Butter Picassos- Glow in the Dark Dinosaurs

K, E and I arrived early to the studio to set up the easels, canvases, brushes, bowls, smocks and rags.  This class was going to be extra special since we were using glow in the dark paint.  I wanted to do something to celebrate the 4th of July- something sparkly- so K and I came up with this theme!

Here is the room before the kiddos arrive...

And then they arrive.

So what do you get when you put 12 kids in a room, with their moms and you give 8 of them paint, paintbrushes and a mission to paint either glow in the dark fireworks or dinosaurs?

You get happy faces like this!!!

And like this...

You see children focus and get down to business, like this...

And like this- now that is focus!

Here are our dinosaurs and stars drying on the sidewalk- almost ready for the glow in the dark paint!

After we painted the Glow in the Dark paint we let it dry for a bit, ate some snacks, talked, discussed our favorite movies, cartoons, outdoor activities...  And then we took the paintings into the bathroom, turned off the light and shut the door.  And we had a parade of glowing dinosaurs under sparkly fireworks.  The kids thought it was awesome and there were lots of oohs and ahhs (some from the moms, too!).

It was so much fun, can't wait the bring out the GITD paint again- maybe for spooky halloween paintings!  Thanks everyone for coming to paint with us and we will see you next class!

How is your child's art program at school?

Or, I suppose I should start by asking if your kid's school even has an art program.  Art and music are often the first areas to get cut- it's a reality and a situation that warrants more than one blog post.  For now, I just wanted to talk about how we as parents can raise art awareness in our children.  Without art programs in school, whether our children know the difference between a Picasso and a Pollock depends on us!  Perhaps you don't thing art appreciation is as important as arithmetic, I see where you are coming from.  But before you dismiss art education let me share a couple of things art teaches our children.

As a young child, painting, drawing and other art activities enhance perception, fine motor skills, language and social interaction. Children are open and more attuned to their visual senses so they can truly appreciate (and describe) their creations and those of others (even though they seem like just scribbles to us).  Creating their own artwork is one way in which children create meaning and structure in their lives.

If your child is into molding, he is working his fingers to prepare him for writing.  If she is into collage, she is cutting and giving order to the pieces. If he is into painting he is using the brush to express his emotions in a physical manner that is expressive yet controlled.  And talk about confidence building and pride of creation...  K and E beam when they paint a canvas and I am equally as proud of their creations.  :-)

If you cannot find an art class to enroll your child in (although we offer several ;-)), than just buy open ended art supplies and let your child create at home.  Even if you have younger children, one of the joys of art is you do not have to wait until your child can read to introduce them to the the visual language of art.  For our Pee Wee Picassos class there is no finished product, only classes devoted to certain mediums.  The Pee Wee (ages 2 yrs- yrs) class is child-centered allowing the children to experiment with media, to learn skills and concepts, to practice and then create something.  Our Peanut Butter Picassos (ages 4yrs-9yrs) does have a finished project, but it allows the children to use the same paint, canvases and brushes of our adult class, giving them the freedom to create in the way an adult artist does.

And art education does not have to be limited to just the making of art- it can also be introducing your child to art in museums, in nature, on the internet, in old art magazines or (my favorite) go to open artist studios and let them see how an artist creates.  It is amazing to share with a child what goes into making a bronze sculpture!  It is also amazing to hear a child describe what is going on in a painting.  Sometimes K comes up with the most wonderful stories from paintings- and I make sure to celebrate each interpretation.  Letting children experience art created by others deepens their understanding of the world and connects them to people and situations they have yet to encounter.  It teaches them diversity, acceptance, confidence in their analytical skills and it gives them their own personal visual vocabulary of what is beautiful (outside of what the media tells them).  Viewing different types of art allows them to develop their own sense of style and preference, which they will undoubtedly do.

So from art education come the skills to write, to create, to bring order, to plan, to think "outside of the box", to analyze what they see, to use words to describe intent/emotion/visual stimulus, to record and interpret and to progressively build on an idea.  I think these sound like skills we want our kids to have.  And for that reason I strive to have my kids know the difference between a Pollock and a Picasso and I hope you will too...

As Pablo Picasso said, "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up."

Peanut Butter Picassos- our class for ages 4yrs-9 yrs

My boys and I are so excited for Thursdays class- GLOW IN THE DARK FIREWORKS OR DINOSAURS!  Yes, we are painting with glow in the dark paint.  It is so cool and I wish I could take a picture of the finished painting in all its glowing glory, but how do you take a pic of something that glow in the dark?  I will have to experiment and see what I can do...

Here are the sample paintings for our class.  The kids can modify however they want to- I always encourage all our painters (young and old) to make it their own!

As always, we end the class with kid friendly snacks so they can celebrate their artwork with some yummy treats!  There are still 2 spots open so if you are interested please check out the Paint N' Party To Go website or email me, Elaine.
